10 Famous Movie Moments Made Possible By Totally Ignoring History
5. Both Pretty Boy Floyd & Baby Face Nelson Outlived John Dillinger And Weren't Shot By Melvin Purvis - Public Enemies
Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson (because all gangster accomplices must be named three times) were two of notorious bank robber John Dillinger's closest and most trusted allies - in Michael Mann's Dillinger biopic, Public Enemies, these real-life people were played by Channing Tatum and Stephen Graham, respectively. In two of the film's most memorable scenes, then, these characters are shot and killed by pursuing FBI agent Melvin Purvis, who is Christian Bale. The problem here, then? Although Purvis was involved in the killing of both of these men, the times of their death are heavily skewered as the movie incorrectly depicts Dillinger outliving his accomplices. Pretty Boy Floyd actually lived for three whole weeks after his boss was shot outside that famous theatre, and Baby Face Nelson was alive and well until the FBI caught up with him months later. Though it might seem petty to point it out, that's a lot of changed history - especially since Purvis kills Pretty Boy Floyd in one of the movie's earliest scenes and is promoted as a result.
