10 Famous People You May Have Forgotten Were Oscar Winners

10. Stanley Kubrick

When talking about the legendary director Stanley Kubrick, most people will often bemoan the fact that he never won a major Oscar (producing, writing, directing) at any point throughout this career. But these discussions almost always leave out the fact that Kubrick did win at least one Oscar... for Best Visual Effects in 1969 for his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Stanley Kubrick has the type of filmography that seems to just get better with age, but that does not mean his movies were loved and adored when they were first released. Many of Kubrick's films confounded audiences at the time. Reactions to 2001: A Space Odyssey back in 1968 were very mixed, A Clockwork Orange was a highly controversial film thanks to its content, and The Shining was actually nominated for a couple of Razzies. The Academy has never been known to award filmmakers whose movies divide audiences. This explains why Kubrick never won a Best Director Oscar despite four nominations. Still, at least he has an Oscar! Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, Howard Hawks - these guys only managed to receive an honorary award at the end of their career. At least Kubrick received an Oscar when he was still making movies. Plus, the fact that Kubrick won the award for Visual Effects also goes to show just how versatile he was.
