10 Fan Theories For Upcoming Movies (That We Hope Are True)
1. Tenet Is A Sequel To Inception
Every new Christopher Nolan movie is shrouded in a thick, impenetrable fog of secrecy pretty much right up until opening weekend. We'll get a handful of trailers and some other pre-release marketing, sure, but the level of information we receive about his projects is kept to the barest of bare minimums.
Next year's Tenet is no different, and at the minute, all we have is a release date, a cast, a cryptic teaser that played in select theatres ahead of Hobbs & Shaw, and honestly, no idea what the film is even about. It's been described as an action epic set in the world of espionage, which basically tells us nothing.
So... what might be going on here? Well, according to a fan theory that's gained some traction recently, Tenet is, in fact, a sequel to Nolan's 2010 blockbuster, Inception.
This idea starts with the basic similarities between both films. Like Tenet, Inception is also an action epic set in the world of espionage. Furthermore, Inception revolved around dreams, and Tenet is said to include time travel elements - so both films have a sci-fi slant. They also share a release window: smack-bang in the middle of July.
As for specific details, the theory posits that Cobb's kids in Inception have grown up to look like Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson, who will both appear in Tenet. Pattinson has even dyed his hair a lighter shade of blonde for his role, and his longer hairstyle looks like a more grown-up version of the one sported by Cobb's son.
Nolan has even expanded the Inception universe before. When the film released, Warner Bros launched two prequel comics titled The Cobol Job and The Big Under, and at one stage, the director was even interested in creating an Inception video game. In short, he's open to expanding this universe, and a sequel could scratch that itch.
True, Nolan isn't the kind of filmmaker who's likely to make a sequel, but if he did do one, it'd probably be something like this - a bit mysterious, a bit indirect. And wouldn't this just be a buzzy, awesome surprise, one worthy of a prime summer release date?
