10 Fan Theories That Actually Improve Classic Horror Films
1. Sarah Killed Everyone Herself - The Descent
The ending of The Descent definitely calls for theories and interpretations. Sarah is knocked unconscious, after which she wakes up, escapes the cave, gets in her car and speeds away... only for the movie to reveal this was just a hallucination. The film ends with her back in the cave, unaware that she hasn't really made it out.
If it wasn't already obvious, this ending makes clear Sarah's grip on reality isn't totally firm, and so can you really trust anything you see during the movie? One theory posited by Josh Grimm in "Solving The Descent" claims that Sarah didn't just imagine that last scene; she imagined all of the crawlers, and she killed her friends herself.
It's stated that being inside the cave can give people disorientation and hallucinations, and there are a number of scenes where Sarah's friends look at her in shock as if terrified of her, not the crawlers. There's even a moment when Sarah lets out a scream, but when the film cuts to her friends, that scream turns into the sound of a crawler screeching. It's as if the film gives us a brief glimpse into reality, where there are no creatures but Sarah herself. She was already an unstable person, and so with this interpretation, being trapped in the cave simply made her snap. Now that's dark.
