10 Fan Theories That Make Comedies Really Depressing

5. Back To The Future – Doc Was On A Suicide Mission

Christopher Lloyd’s turn as the endearingly eccentric Doc Brown is one of the best things about the Back to the Future franchise but a rather gloomy theory suggests there’s more than meets the eye to this seemingly lovable character.

When Doc meets with Marty at the Twin Pines Mall to put his time-travelling DeLorean to the test we know two things: that Doc has many a failed experiment behind him and that this is the first time he’s powered his sports car with plutonium. Sure, Doc seems confident but he really has no way of knowing for sure if his latest experiment will be a success.

Which makes Doc’s insistence that he and Marty stand in the path of the speeding DeLorean – manned by his pet dog Einstein no less – pretty questionable indeed. What if Doc, driven to insanity and despair by years of failure just thought, "F**k it! If this doesn’t work, life isn’t worth living"?

It’s fair enough Doc taking himself out but why turn it into a suicide-murder mission by taking Marty with him and leaving a speeding car loaded with plutonium to presumably crash and kill Einstein and the residents of Hill Valley via radiation poisoning?

Not so endearingly eccentric after all, is he?
