10 Fierce Feuds Between Film Stars And Critics

3. Rob Schneider vs Roger Ebert

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwDWLp9Mk-0 Rob Schneider has often been vocal after receiving criticism for his movie roles, having vocally hit back at several critics who suggested his racial stereotyping in films like 50 First Dates was decidedly ignorant. He's tussled with a fair few writers during his career, but his most famous spat was with legendary critic Roger Ebert in 2005. After Schnieder's dismal comedy Deuce Bigalow: European Gigalow opened to unsurprisingly negative reviews, Schneider targeted one particular critic - Patrick Goldstein of the LA Times - after the writer had labelled Schneider a "third-rate comic". Schneider went haywire, condemning Goldstein for his review, and claiming that the critic was unsuited to making such comments given that he'd won no awards for his writing over the years. Ruffled beyond belief, Schneider even went as far as calling Goldstein a "scumbag". Then the big guns weighed in. Roger Ebert gave Deuce Bigalow: European Gigalow his lowest rating of zero stars, and in his concluding paragraphs rushed to the aid of fellow critic Goldstein. After reiterating Schneider's comments about Goldsteing being unfit to criticise given that he'd never won an award, Ebert's casual retort was pretty genius, directly addressing Schneider with "As chance would have it, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks". This one has a happy ending though. After a bit of verbal sparring between the two over the years, Ebert eventually succumbed to reoccurring cancer in 2013, and Schneider's reaction was one of impressive dignity. The comedian sent flowers and a tongue-in-cheek note to Ebert marked "from your least favorite movie star". Schneider also paid tribute to the critic with an essay after his death, stating how he had huge respect for Ebert for his contribution to cinema as a whole.
