The Quest

Rescue the endangered dinosaurs on Isla Nublar from an impending volcanic explosion, by helping transport them to a conservation facility located off the American mainland.

What Happens?

Since the catastrophic events of Jurassic World, the park's former operations manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) has become a - don't laugh - dinosaur-rights activist, forming the Dinosaur Protection Group committed to saving Isla Nublar's doomed dinos.

With the government siding with Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) and agreeing that they should be left to die in order to correct the natural order (and quite rightly so), Claire agrees to take part in a covert rescue operation at the behest of John Hammond's former partner Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell).

Naturally, she brings a reluctant Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) along for the ride.

Why Did They Fail?

For starters, a bunch of the dinos die during the initial rescue attempt, with Claire and Lockwood's team being surprised by a hastened volcanic eruption.

As for the rest of the dinos, they're transported to Lockwood's estate where his snivelling assistant Mills (Rafe Spall) plots to auction the creatures off to the highest bidder rather than actually conserve them.

This eventually leads to the dinos being unleashed upon the world by Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) after they become trapped in a confined area and are overcome with toxic gas.

Given that the dinosaurs are now out in the wild and imminently due to descend upon urban areas, it's not much of a leap to suggest that they'll be summarily slaughtered by the armed forces, amounting to pretty much the exact opposite of Claire and Owen's initial "save the dinos" mission.

As he usually is, Ian Malcolm turned out to be the smartest guy in the room, yet the film wants the audience to buy that these reckless "heroes" were really doing the right thing.

Still, it was their quest to save the dinosaurs, no matter how misguided, and one which they patently failed to accomplish by film's end.
