10 Film Reboots And Remakes To Be Concerned About In 2014
9. Robocop
Plot: Cop gets critically injured in the line of duty, winds up becoming half-cop/half-robot. Based on: This will be a remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 film, which I consider to be an absolute classic in the genre. The original Robocop is a darkly funny film with over-the-top violence and deliciously evil performances from Kurtwood Smith and Miguel Ferrer. It's a highly entertaining film that very much deserves its R-rating. Sure, there is a chance that the Robocop remake will be good. The trailer rubs me the wrong way, but I was going to have my reservations no matter what. The biggest red flag for me is that the movie is rated PG-13 which means it will have absolutely none of the violent dark humor of the original. The presence of Michael Keaton, however, intrigues me. Michael Keaton is always awesome. When I was growing up, he was an A-list actor. He was Batman, for God's sake. He seamlessly transitioned from comedy to action to drama, while always retaining his charm. Where the hell has he been the past fifteen years? Overall, of course I don't want a carbon copy of the original, but I just don't see how they could do a variation of the initial concept and make it PG-13 without completely neutering it. Who wants a Disney-fied Robocop? That said, I love Michael Keaton. I also love Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael K. Williams, and Jackie Earle Haley. But, I am especially delighted to see Michael Keaton in this movie. When he appeared in The Other Guys three years ago, I was hoping that it was the beginning of a major comeback for him. He's in both Robocop and the upcoming Need for Speed movie so 2014 looks to be a big year for him. It would be even better if either of those movies wound up being good, but I'll take all the Keaton I can get at this point. U.S. Release Date: February 12th
