10 Film Remakes That Actually Worked

9. Dawn Of The Dead

dawn of the dead

George A. Romero, the king of the zombies, made the critically and hugely financially successful Dawn of the Dead back in 1978. It is often considered the film that kickstarted the cultural obsession of zombies, and went on to spawn many references and spoofs in popular culture, perhaps most memorable of all being Shaun of the Dead. Its iconic scenes of gory violence, and the ultimate location during a zombie apocalypse, a shopping centre (or mall to US readers), which is both incredibly handy but also openly dangerous. So why remake it? Ever since Romero kicked off the craze, there has been a constant healthy stream of zombie films being released. Many people would suggest that zombie films have been done to death by now (not myself, I can't get enough) due to the fact that there's only so many different scenarios that you can create with dawdling, stumbling meat bags that have a craving for your brain. Why not try and create a narrative involving zombie's that has absolutely never been done before instead of remaking the quintessential classic? The biggest difference, and certainly not to Romero's liking, was changing the slow-paced zombies into quick-paced zombies that would outrun the majority of us (maybe if we didn't sit around watching so many movies...) that were more akin to the creatures from Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. Zombie purists, like Romero, may lament this choice, but at the end of the day it is the biggest difference from the original, which only gives it more credibility to be remade. If anyone should remake (or re-imagine) a film, then you could go worse than Zack Snyder. He has his own directorial style, and although this debut for him didn't feature the vibrant bright colours and slow-motion being heavily used in every other scene that we have all come to expect from Snyder, it was still apparent that this remake was made by a man who would go onto become one of the most popular and successful filmmakers in Hollywood. If you flick onto a film that he directed and you don't know what the film is, chances are you will still know that it is a Zack Snyder film.
