7. Sinister
Sinister is a horror film that is based around a crime writer, Ellison Oswalt, moving into a new house with his family, where a family was murdered in the past. In the house he discovers a box of 8mm films and a projector to watch them on, before realising that they are 'snuff' films that depict brutal murders, the latest of which is the murders that took place in their home. As the film develops, Ellison notices the same figure in each video and begins to try and unravel the mystery, discovering the figure is a Pagan deity named Bughuul that enters their world through the films and eats the souls of children. Ellison takes his family back to their old home, before discovering that in doing so he has put them in danger, as each family who moved to the house of the previous murder, then fled to their old house, was murdered by one of their children. Finally, Ellison is drugged and awakens to find his daughter holding an axe, who then swiftly kills him and the rest of their family before being led away by Bughuul. Sinister was a well received film that had some genuinely great scares, not least the 8mm film clips that were all unsettling and creepy not to mention terrifying and horrific. Whilst I do not wish to see numerous sequels, it would be interesting to catch up with the story years later after a few more murders, so the 8mm films do not become repetitive. Or maybe even just a year later, with the murders now taking place within much shorter periods of time. Either way, I must admit I didn't expect Sinister to follow the pattern of the Paranormal Activity films or Insidious and I thought it would have a happier ending. I love to be scared and so a single sequel would be great news for me, I would love to see a character finding a way to overcome Bughuul and stop the trend of the murders.
