10 Films President Trump Needs To Watch
7. X-Men
Upon realizing that mutants live among us and possess such powers as telepathy and the ability to walk through walls, Senator Kelly (Bruce Davison) wants a simple answer to a simple question – “Are mutants dangerous?” After all, the American people deserve the right to decide if they want their children to be in school with mutants or to be taught by mutants.
“We must know who they are,” he says, “and above all, what they can do.” To that end, he introduces a scheme to register mutants, and in so doing singles them out (unwittingly?) as a group to be feared, opening the door to shame and isolation.
An indie movie disguised as a blockbuster, X-Men has so much more on its mind than pitting superheroes against each other. If you replace the word mutant with your minority group of choice, then it’s clear that the movie – directed by an openly gay filmmaker - is really about prejudice. It’s a theme that’ll be at the heart of Trump’s four years, like it or not.
