10 Films That Only Make Sense If You See The Director’s Cut
9. Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King
Peter Jackson movies don't need to be any longer. If anything, they should come with ice cream intervals and comfy futons so cinemagoers can stretch their legs.
That said, his even lengthier director's cut of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the one which makes the most sense.
Okay, so the trilogy capper was mostly coherent when it arrived in cinemas but it ludicrously left the fate of one of the saga's main villains hanging in the air.
Fortunately for everyone, Jackson revealed what became of Christopher Lee's evil wizard Saruman early into the director's cut, ensuring all of the ends met by the time Frodo and Sam reached Mount Doom.
In addition to plugging that gaping hole, the extended Return of the King also gave us more epic battle sequences and an expanded opening that shed light on Gollum's origin, so it's far and away the definitive version.
