10 Films That Would Make Great TV Shows
4. Dredd
After the god-awful Sly Stallone vehicle Judge Dredd in 1995 (you're not supposed to take off the damn helmet!), fans of the violent authoritarian judge, jury and executioner, were finally treated to the film the comic book character deserved in 2012's Dredd.
However, even though critics and fans were pleased by Dredd, away from fans it struggled to find an audience and it consequently put in a bad performance at the box office. Had it earned the takings it deserved then there would most likely be a cinematic franchise at least two films strong already, but for now we've had to make do with obsessively rewatching Karl Urban's Judge storm a tower block full of drug-fuelled gangsters.
Since donning the helmet Karl Urban has been the unofficial spokesperson for the future of Dredd, constantly giving fans updates on the character's future. Most recently in 2016 he stated that there had been meetings with both Netflix and Amazon Prime about either another film or a television series.
Netflix may be the safer option with its proven track record with adapting violent but less popular comic book characters to screen, but beggars can't be choosers. Wherever a Dredd TV series found a home, it would make for the perfect grizzly futuristic police procedural action-thriller, pitting Dredd and his fellow Judges against an array of deadly foes.
Also, with there being a recent shift to the right within western politics, Dredd could very well prove to be one of the most metaphorically and thematically resonant comic book characters to grace our screens, asking the sort of questions that are posed in the character's pages, such as how much power should officers of the law possess? A continuing drama would give the makers time to explore these issues with depth and lots and lots of blood.
