Where to begin with the case of Topher Grace and his role in Spider-Man 3?

Topher Grace had originally landed the leading role of Eric Forman after the show’s creators, Bonnie and Terry Turner, saw him performing in a high school play in which their daughter was also participating in. Even though Grace had never professionally acted before, they were thoroughly impressed with his acting and wanted him for the series.

And credit to Topher, he became the beating heart of That 70s Show with his fantastic characterisation of the ‘adorkable’ Eric. It was a huge breakthrough for Grace and seemingly opened his career up for a wealth of acting opportunities. Unfortunately, he jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire when left That 70s Show to star in the 2007 movie Spider-Man 3.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 remains the nadir of the trilogy. It’s overstuffed with too many plot points, unlikable characters, bad CGI and some bizarre dance moves from Tobey Maguire. But the final nail in the coffin was the huge anti-climax of the villain Venom finally being adapted to the big screen. It just became one villain too many for the film and Grace simply wasn’t good enough to play an antagonistic role.

There’s a sad irony to Topher Grace’s departure from That 70s Show – his absence caused the sitcom’s decline all whilst he starred in a movie-killing role that didn’t quite help him break the movies like he planned.
