9. The Invitation

Karyn Kusama's tightly wound horror film The Invitation follows Will (Logan Marshall-Green), who accepts an invitation to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife Eden (Tammy Blanchard).

Increasingly strange events occur throughout the night, and Will eventually learns that Eden, her new husband, and other members of the party have joined a cult-like group called The Invitation, apparently intended to help people work through grief.

Will continues to grow suspicious that something horrible is going to happen, and in the climax he's finally proven right when a red lantern is lit in the garden and the cult members attempt to make the collective group drink poison in order to be "rid of their pain."

At this moment all hell breaks loose as the cult members try to kill every member of the party and then themselves, but ultimately Will, his girlfriend Kira (Emayatzy Corinealdi), and another guest, Tommy (Mike Doyle), fend their attackers off and survive the night.

But in the final scene, Will and Kira look out over the Hollywood Hills to see many distinctive red lanterns lit up, suggesting that other cult members living nearby are hatching their own murder-suicide plots, all while the authorities attempt to respond to the rising mayhem.

Given that The Invitation presents itself as a self-contained horror film throughout, to pull back and reveal a much larger, more terrifying scale in the final moments was a true masterstroke, leaving the audience with plenty to think about as the credits roll.
