There's no denying that the X-Men franchise needs to move on from Magneto at this point, but there are other uses for the villain, including taking him down the heroic/anti-hero route that his recent comic book adventures have.

As a member of the X-Men, he doesn't shy away from taking extreme measures to deal with the humans that threaten them, but is by no means a full-blown villain capable of committing genocide!

Sir Ian McKellen is now far too old to return as the character and, with all due respect to the legendary actor, Michael Fassbender has always been better as the Master of Magnetism. Having never really been given particularly strong material to work with since Matthew Vaughn left the series, Fassbender would almost certainly jump at the chance to join the MCU.

After all, it's not like he's had a huge amount of luck with other franchises (here's looking at you, Alien), and telling a new Magneto's story in different and unexpected ways could be a game-changer for him.
