As mentioned, Sir Patrick Stewart has confirmed that he met with Kevin Feige to talk about returning as Professor X, but reportedly made it clear that he's done with the character after starring in Logan.

Things can change, though, because it's ultimately money that talks and Stewart did up being convinced to take on the lead role in Picard (something no one saw coming). While it would be no bad thing for James McAvoy to reprise the role of Charles Xavier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stewart seems like a much better fit to play the wizened leader of the X-Men.

In those early comic book appearances, Professor X was always portrayed as an older man, and not the hands-on hero he's become in both the movies and recent comics.

Feige got his big break working on 2000's X-Men movie, so it wouldn't be too surprising for him to want to bring back some of the actors he worked with all those years ago when he's finally given the opportunity to reboot Marvel's mutants for the MCU.
