10 Fun Horror Movies You Need To See

6. One Cut of The Dead

A high concept exploration of filmmaking, creative excesses and of course the threat of a zombie invasion/outbreak, One Cut of the Dead combines the above thematic areas into a winning mix that both entertains and shocks without falling into the less desirable trappings of the found footage sub-genre.

The plot is focused on a film crew whose current undertaking is the production of 'One Cut of the Dead', a zombie horror movie whose presentation would be done in one take. Initially, the titular project is presented as a film within the film (which in turn has a movie in itself called True Fear), but eventually explores the origins of the project.

Its director, Takayuki Higurashi (Takayuki Himatsu) oversees a blood ritual to help turn around the favour of the beleaguered production, but inadvertently revives zombies. Despite being a low-budget project, the Shin'ichiro Ueda-directed feature uses its trappings to explore the pros and cons (and blends of both) of indie moviemaking in a meta fashion.

This approach is able to balance its commentary with the usual gore and thrills (its focus on irregular digestive functions is off-putting and effective), succeed in its central gimmick, and flesh out its characters and story in a way that balances humour and pathos.
