5. Darkseid

Had Zack Snyder been allowed to move forward with his ambitious plans for Justice League, we would have been introduced to Darkseid at the end of the first movie before he took centre stage in the sequel. In that, the ruler of Apokolips was set to conquer Earth and bring Superman under his control with the use of the Anti-Life Equation. Sounds pretty epic, right?

Well, we're going to see none of that now, but Darkseid will factor into Ava DuVernay's take on The New Gods, a movie which looks set to borrow plenty of elements from Jack Kirby's time in the DC Universe.

Darkseid is likely to be the antagonist of The New Gods, clashing with heroes like Orion and Big Barda. As weird as this all sounds, it could essentially be Warner Bros.' own Guardians of the Galaxy, and just like Thanos was introduced there before battling The Avengers, The New Gods could serve as a launching platform for Darkseid before he arrives on Earth to face the Justice League.

If and when that inevitably happens, The Avengers franchise might finally have a rival, and Darkseid has all the makings of a big bad infinitely more powerful and compelling than Marvel's Mad Titan.
