10 Genius Moments In Otherwise Irredeemable Films
2. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menance - That Lightsaber Battle
As much as I'd like to put together a list of bad movies without including the first of Georgie's prequels, it would probably feel like a cheat to any Star Wars fan who sat through that colossal slap in the face.
Everyone who's seen the movie - and by this point, even the people who haven't - know the deal: The wooden acting, the stilted dialogue, The Trade Federation, Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd, midi-chlorians...it all added up to a film that was equal parts grating and utterly boring. We saw way too much of the worst characters (Jar Jar), and not nearly enough of the best characters (Darth Maul).
Luckily, Ray Park's Sith Lord makes one hell of an impact during his relatively short amount of screen time, which culminates in a show-stealing lightsaber duel. Maul was the imposing, agile menace whose shadow lurked over the entire film, whether he was in the scene or not. So giving him an epic encounter against Qui-Gon and Obi Wan was an absolute must.
Park's background as a martial artist imbued the fight with an agility and zip you just didn't see in the other lightsaber duels. The only problem with the battle is that it killed off one of the greatest characters in the trilogy far too soon.
