10 GENIUS Ways Recent Movies Pulled Off Insane Scenes
9. Twinning Michael B. Jordan - Sinners
Though Hollywood pretty much perfected the art of doubling actors years ago, it goes without saying that Ryan Coogler's Sinners was considerably more technically demanding than most films featuring doubles, given that Michael B. Jordan's Smokestack twins appear in almost every scene and interact with each other a lot.
This resulted in Coogler and his crew employing a multitude of different tricks and techniques to make the audience believe they were genuinely looking at twins on-screen.
For shots where the camera is still and Smoke and Stack have limited interactions, simple split screens were used, while for more complex camera movements a motion control rig was used to create a repeatable camera motion, allowing takes with Jordan portraying each character to be blended together.
For shots where takes couldn't be blended together, Jordan's face was digitally superimposed over a body double, requiring Jordan to wear a shoulder-mounted camera rig called the "Halo rig," which contains 10 cameras to create a comprehensive 360-degree capture of Jordan's facial expressions.
The combination of all these techniques adds up to an end result that's impressively seamless, allowing the audience to entirely buy into the illusion that Smoke and Stack are a pair of living, breathing characters.
