10 GENIUS Ways Recent Movies Pulled Off Insane Scenes

5. The Face Worm - Until Dawn

One of the more memorable gross-out moments in the recent adaptation of video game Until Dawn is the scene where a worm is shown to have burrowed into the face of protagonist Clover (Ella Rubin).

It's a gnarly moment, albeit one that seems relatively trivial to pull off in post-production with CGI.

But director David F. Sandberg, a fan of practical effects who got his start making no-budget horror shorts, opted to do most of the heavy lifting the hard way.

The worm was actually a practical effect - a worm prop was built and threaded into a facial prosthetic which was then glued to actress Ella Rubin's face, with a stage hand then moving a wire attached to the worm in order to "puppeteer" it.

VFX did come in handy, though, because the wire visibly poked through the prosthetic, and so Rubin's face was effectively digitally smoothed out in post-production.

Given that this could've been a fairly basic task for a VFX team, it was neat to see so much of it done with good ol' fashioned special effects.
