10 Good Movies That Completely Botched Their Final Act

3. War Of The Worlds

Steven Spielberg's take on the classic sci-fi War of the Worlds was by no means perfect up until its climax, but it was a well-made, tense survival romp that was high on spectacle and wonder. But its rushed ending, with its "oh, that was convenient!" attitude, left a lot of viewers scratching their heads, especially if they hadn't had any previous experience with H.G. Wells' story before. To go from such a dangerous position, with Tom Cruise and his family escaping from one of the Tripod's and certain death, to then magically appearing in Boston, greeted by the US forces disposing of weak aliens... and then we find out that his son inexplicably survived deserved doom for being a mental case with a death wish, followed by a Morgan Freeman voiceover explaining that humanity deserves to live because of their immune systems? Well, it just seemed like Spielberg was giving a big middle finger to us all.
