7. Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)
The Italian Gore Maestro throws his lot in with a gut munching fest of a zombie movie. It is a close call between Romero's Dawn of the Dead and Fulci's Zombie Flesh Eaters as to which is the most gory zombie movie. Fulci takes us to a Caribbean setting where a group of various people arrive to investigate reports of extreme dodginess in a remote island. Of course they are zombie fodder as the dead come back to life with a flesh hungry vengeance. There are some terrific gore moments in Fulci's film as a woman is subject to ocular mayhem with a spike right through her eye. That could be the most iconic moment in Zombie Flesh Eaters. Vying with it for prominence is the amazing shark versus zombie under water sequence. Plus there are entrails galore in some prolonged disgusting corpse eating scenes. The special effects are as good as anything Tom Savini ever did. At least Fulci's zombies have the grace to be maggoty and rotten looking. Hard core gore delivered by the Italian master, Zombie Flesh Eaters is an absorbing film made highly watchable by the mass of animal innards sloshed around the screen. Just don't watch it too close after dinner...
