10 Great 2013 Movies You Should Regret Missing

9. Upstream Color

shane-carruth-amy-seimetz-upstream-color After trying to describe Upstream Color to my friend I kind of told myself I would never attempt doing so again. That isn't because Upstream Color is a bad movie but rather Director Shane Carruth is on a mission to fry brains with his films. Nevertheless, it's a very abstract movie about why we feel certain emotions when we do. It also has a subplot about pigs and a weird insect. Upstream Color is easily one of the strangest films I have ever personally seen and probably sounds completely stupid whenever people talk about it but there is a method to Shane's madness. Of course he's probably the only one privy to that method considering he directs, writes, produces, musically scores, and for all we know reviews his own films under an alias. Shane Carruth is a self made man who believes in going out there and learning through experimentation. If you like movies by Terrence Malick but with a small dose of arthouse science fiction I strongly suggest checking this one out. It won't make sense entirely after it's over but it's also one of those films that is so out there it's fun to piece together and theorize about. I'm almost positive my quick synopsis did no justice so go watch it. Your mind will be fried but the film will grow on you and stick with you.
