The Day of the Beast is sure to have anyone's undivided attention almost immediately. The Spanish black comedy follows a priest called Angel (Alex Angulo) who's desperate to sell his soul to the Devil.

As fascinating as that premise is, things only gets crazier. Father Angel believes the Antichrist will be born on Christmas Eve, which is mere hours away. As such, the priest hopes to be granted an audience with Satan by selling his soul, giving him the opportunity to kill his spawn and thus, avert the end of the world

Assuming his soul is too pure to be sold, Angel scurries around the city, committing as many sins as possible. It goes without saying that watching a man of the cloth pushing people over and stealing beggars' money to stop Armageddon is hilarious.

Even though The Day of the Beast is a comedy, it contains some genuinely unsettling moments, especially when the Dark Lord himself shows up. Although Angel's bumbling antics could dilute the scares, Alex Angelo makes it work, since he convincingly portrays a man who believes judgment day is approaching.

And thanks to the looming threat, the snappy writing, and Angulo's frantic performance, The Day of the Beast is a must-see.
