The duties of a babysitter should be straightforward. While they're on the clock, they make sure the kids they're caring for have fun, brush their teeth, and go to bed at a reasonable time.

But in Better Watch Out, Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) is expected to stop a home invasion during Christmas while looking after 12-year-old, Luke (Levi Miller). When the burglars tie Ashley up, it's up to Luke to save the day.

Despite the bare-bones plot, the teen horror is gripping, thanks to the leads' performances. DeJonge and Miller work off each other beautifully, which makes it more hard-hitting when things go awry.

Even though Better Watch Out could function fine without the Christmas backdrop, incorporating the beloved holiday allowed the filmmakers to devise plenty of striking visuals. After all, it's more entertaining to see the ensemble killing one another dressed in snowman jumpers or while tied up in Christmas lights.

Better Watch Out juggles the horror and comedy elements wonderfully, especially during one sequence where Luke sets up booby traps. This scene is an obvious nod to Home Alone, but doesn't shy away from what would actually happen if a paint can slammed into a person's face.

The title is fitting since viewers should watch out for the final rug-pull. The climax recontextualises the whole story so effectively, it's worth a rewatch.
