10 Great Cliffhanger Endings From Recent Horror Movies
5. Is Sarah Still Haunted? - The Hole In The Ground
It’s fair to say that one of the first rules if you are living in a horror film is never move to a rural home in the middle of the woods.
But that’s exactly what single mother Sarah and her young son Christopher do in 2019’s excellent The Hole In The Ground, and things go... not well. After an incident in the woods where she discovers a colossal sinkhole, Sarah becomes convinced that her son has been replaced by an evil entity that is taking his form after he starts to exhibit creepy behaviour.
In the film’s final act, Sarah confronts the entity and reveals it to be a creature known as a “changeling”, taking the form of her son as she suspected. Sarah then ventures down into the sinkhole and after a terrifying underground encounter with several faceless creatures, she finds her son and escapes with him.
It all seems like a happy ending for Sarah and Christopher: they move back to the city, Sarah resumes her university education and Christopher appears happy and settled in their new home, but as the film ends we see that Sarah has covered her wall in mirrors, something she learned earlier allows you to spot a changeling and apparently still unable to let go of the fear that her son may be replaced at any time by another creature.
It’s a more subtle cliffhanger than some of the other entries on this list, suggesting that at best, the incident has left heavy scars on Sarah, and at worst, more horror may yet be in store for her and her son.
