Directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of renowned filmmaker David Cronenberg, 2020’s Possessor shows the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree, with Cronenberg skilfully merging body horror with an intriguing sci-fi concept.

The film follows Vos, played by an excellent Andrea Risenbourgh, an assassin for hire who uses technology to implant her consciousness into another person in order to carry out killings before destroying the host and returning to her own body.

Throughout the movie, we see the extreme mental toll that constantly merging with other people’s minds is having on Vos, with a test carried out by her handler Girder (played by a sinister Jennifer Jason Leigh) used to determine whether she has retained her humanity after each dive.

Things start to get murky for Vos after she accepts a contract to kill the CEO of a data analytics company by jacking into the mind of his soon-to-be son in law Colin (Christopher Abbott), whose mind starts to fight back against Vos’ possession.

This battle over Colin’s mind eventually claims the life of Vos’ husband and son, her only remaining personal ties to her current identity, and the final scene of the movie sees her once again taking the test, seemingly having lost her final shreds of humanity. We’re left wondering if there’s any of her conscience left, or if she’s condemned to now live out the rest of her days as a soulless killing machine.
