10 Great Directors Who Haven't Made Anything Good For Years

10. Guillermo Del Toro

A shining monument to what Hollywood will do to anyone with an ounce of originality and distinction, Guillermo Del Toro has gone from one of the most visually astounding filmmakers in the world to merely the first person a studio calls when the phrase "spin-off line of toys" gets used. Since becoming critically beloved, he's only had time to direct a Hellboy sequel and the rock-em-sock-em made manifest Pacific Rim.

Instead of continuing to make visually astonishing films, his career has become one Executive Producer credit after another, as he's been in charge of making sure that the likes of Puss In Boots, Kung Fu Panda, and Rise of the Guardians have the visual edge over the other dearth of big budget animations. On top of that he's also been providing "creative consultation" to the likes of Cowboys and Aliens and Edge of Tomorrow.

His next outing is a ghost story with Tom Hiddlestone and Jessica Chastain set in Cumbria of all places, but whether this ends the rut he's fallen into over the last 10 years remains to be seen.
