10 Great Films About Forbidden Love
9. Loving (2016)
Certainly one of the most underrated films of the last decade, Jeff Nichols' powerful biographical drama tells the inspiring story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), who were run out of Virginia in the late 1950s for violating the state's strict anti-miscegenation laws.
Loving sensitively details the racism the couple faced during their marriage, and digs deep into the Supreme Court case that they spearheaded to invalidate laws against interracial marriage.
A relevant and painful tale of prejudice and strength in the face of bigotry and racism, Loving is as much an historical drama as it is a tale of tragically forbidden love. Thanks to the truly phenomenal performances of Edgerton and an Oscar-nominated Negga, it's the love story that is most memorable about the film.
Despite the push backs from their community, Richard and Mildred never waver in their devotion to each other, and their strength is perfectly immortalised throughout the film. Theirs is a story that has to be seen.
