10 Great Films From 2015 You'll Never Watch Again (And Why)
6. Black Mass
Johnny Depp briefly returned to playing actual human beings and not mugging caricatures covered in white face paint for this biopic of a notorious Boston gangster. He received great reviews for the first time in years, and he was backed up by a great supporting cast too. His performance is somewhat spoiled by the layers of make-up he wears for the role though, from an unconvincing bald cap to icy contact lenses that make him look like a vampire. Even Tim Burton would have made him dial it down a notch. Why Youll Never Watch It Again: The film is well made with good performances and production design, yet it feels kind of hallow somehow. Its Goodfellas-lite essentially; it covers a lot of the same ground without nearly the same amount of style or energy. They even nick the famous Funny how? scene, which doesnt work as well here. The film was a reminder that Depp can be great when he wants puts the effort in, but that's not enough to make Black Mass stand out from the sea of other, stronger gangster movies.
