Jonathan Glazer's mesmerising sci-fi horror film Under the Skin stars Scarlet Johansson as a humanoid alien preying on and devouring men in Scotland. While presented as a narrative feature, significant sequences were actually shot documentary-style because, in effect, they were real.

For the scenes where Johansson's alien drives around the streets of Glasgow and interacts with various keen men, Glazer literally had Johansson drive a car around Glasgow fitted with eight hidden cameras, which would capture her interactions with local non-actors.

Glazer and his sound and camera crew were in the back of the van, while a second van followed behind containing other crew members.

Once an interaction was completed, crew members from the second van would leap out and ask the filmed men to sign consent forms allowing their footage to be used, which most reportedly did.

It's a totally gonzo way to make an otherwise extremely precise piece of art, and yet works so well in lending added eerie intimacy to the alien's grisly mission.
