Like Attachment, Huesera: The Bone Woman is further proof that 2023 is a killer year for first-time directors.

In Michelle Garza Cervera's literal bone-chiller, Valeria is overjoyed when she falls pregnant. But after she's cursed by a spirit, Valeria's friends and family begin to avoid her. Taking drastic measures to free herself of this dark force, Valeria finds herself pushing her loved ones away even more.

Huesera perfectly blends the real stress of being a new parent with the fear of the unknown, making this supernatural feature surprisingly relatable.

Even though Huesera has a taut script, incredible cinematography, and knockout performances, it's the sound effects that leave the biggest impression. Rather than revealing itself physically, the demon makes its presence known with the sound of cracking bones. The popping and grinding noises are so unsettling, it's a Herculean task to sit through Huesera without wincing.

There are so many shots of cracking knuckles and bones being pulled from meat, it's hard for Valeria (and the viewers) to tell whether the sounds are from the demon or not, which magnifies the tension exponentially.
