A tale of drug deals and double-crossing as Bond is sent to Italy to investigate a drug-smuggling operation sending drugs into England by M, who puts the super agent in touch with CIA informant Kristatos, who informs Bond that the drug operation can be traced back to Enrico Colombo. When investigating Colombo, Bond is captured and brought before Colombo on his ship, the Colombina, where the suspect informs Bond that it is in fact Kristatos - backed by the Russians - who is behind the drug smuggling operation. Colombo and Bond work together to eliminate Kristatos, with the former providing information in return for Italy taking none of the blame to which Bond agrees to help Colombo. They sail to Santa Maria, confronting Kristatos and his men and attacking their ship and warehouse, killing Kristatos in the process. The story, which remains one of the only Fleming stories not adapted for film, provides ample foundaton for a strong film - albeit one that extends some of the narrative a little. It's probably the most likely remaining Fleming Bond to be adapted in future, provided future film-makers return to the source for inspiration.
