4. The Pale Man - Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

I'm not sure it really gets creepy or more iconic than the monstrous Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth. When our heroine Ofelia embarks on a quest to retrieve a scared dagger, she encounters this ominous ugly sitting at a table prepared for a grand feast. The temptation of the food is clearly a trap, as the walls are adorned with images of the PM gobbling up children and there's an ominous pile of small discarded shoes nearby. Doug Jones brought this creature to life in wonderful pantomime (as he did for the more prominent but less terrifying Faun) and it's an image for endless nightmares. The hands on the eyes and the blank face with a horrible, hungry maw make this a relatively simple monster but any attempted costume would need to get all the details right for a truly unsettling presentation. Unlike many of the names on this list, Pale Man has gained somewhat of a Cosplay/costume following and there are a number of DIY variations available online. Once you've got those eyes sewn on the hands, the next most important details are the sagging folds of skin and the red, runny mouth. Guaranteed to scare the mess out of the very young or easily frightened.
