10 Great Movies Starring The Brooklyn Nine-Nine Cast

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s ace in the hole is Andre Braugher. Despite being known primarily as a serious dramatic actor, his turn as Captain Holt is by a distance the show’s funniest, Braugher’s unblinking deadpan and commitment to the piece garnering great laughs.

While his small screen CV boasts big hits like Homicide and Men Of A Certain Age, he has been less prolific on film. The 1989 civil war epic Glory boasts his finest cinematic performance, as Corporal Thomas Searles, a free man and soldier in the conflict’s second African American regiment.

Searles is a proto-Holt, only minus any laughs - a studious and honourable figure, working in an institution in which he lacks just about any advantage you could imagine. While the film is stolen by the showier, Oscar winning performance of Denzel Washington, Braugher’s reserved naturalism bolsters the true story greatly.

It’s a gruelling film, not necessarily an obvious recommendation for fans of lighthearted comedy fare, but also an important story well told and with an excellent early turn from an actor who deserves way more recognition.
