10 Great Movies That Audiences Originally Hated
1. Batman Returns
Batman Returns was a critical and commercial success. Critics loved it, and audiences loved it. It feels weird putting it on this list but wait for the kicker. It turns out many parental organizations despised this movie and so did Warner Bros' commercial partners like McDonalds who spent big money on an advertising campaign that unwittingly presented it as a family friendly movie.
For a long time, it faced a deep-rooted stigma and many fans of the cape crusader grew up unable to see this film. But time heals all wounds and it's now considered one of the best of all Batman movies.
Director Tim Burton's vision is unmatched, his characters are incredible and the tone he captures is as infectious as it is dark. It's just a shame that the studio didn't understand it, audiences were duped into expecting an entirely different movie by the marketing campaign and it ultimately led to Batman being handed to Joel Schumacher.
At least now it's counted as a classic.
