10 Great Movies You Didn't Understand The First Time

1. The Tree Of Life

The Tree Of Life
Fox Searchlight

The broad thematic ideas of The Tree Of Life are truly fascinating. The idea of the universe existing with a divine grace in permanence only to be contrasted by the brusk brutality of life is a message that is very sentimentally explored. The problem is naturally that this theme i seemingly impossible to discern at first glance.

For many, the deep philosophical meditations on childhood weren't as noticeable as all of the natural imagery. The smallness of life in contrast to the grandness of death was left to viewers who really poured their minds into picking apart this movie, but for the average viewer, most of its subtext was met with a confused shrug and a bored look.

Despite what it was marketed as, this is not a linear Oscar-bait story about a family in the 1950s. It's a beautifully shot, intimately acted piece that was borderline incomprehensible and devoid of much actual plot. The film was beloved by critics, even though none of them would be keen to admit just how long it took for them to make sense of it all.
