8. I Am Not A Serial Killer

This 2016 adaptation of Dan Wells' novel casts Max Records (Where the Wild Things Are) as John Wayne Cleaver, a mortician's son who has been diagnosed a sociopath, and fears he will wind up becoming a serial killer. While struggling to repress his own homicidal urges, he becomes fascinated with a series of bizarre murders in his usually uneventful home town, and is determined to identify and confront the culprit.

Not unlike Wells' novel, director Billy O'Brien's film is a curious blend of psychological thriller and teenage angst drama, with a thick streak of jet black humour and some unexpected twists. In some respects, it's not too far removed in tone and content from Netflix hit Stranger Things.

While the film points to a strong future for Records, it also boasts a scene-stealing turn from Christopher Lloyd, and solid support from Laura Fraser, Christina Baldwin and Karl Geary.
