3. The Lobster
Sci fi movies are a weird bunch, that much is obvious. The Lobster though might just be the strangest movie on this list.
It’s an absurdist dystopian tale, one where single people are given 45 days to find a partner, lest they be turned into animals. Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz are the two leads, both newly single and desperate to mingle. It’s that or be turned into an animal, after all.
As you might expect, given the premise, there is a lot more to it than just ‘find a partner’. Whoever is in control of the bizarre reality only wants perfectly matched couples to be together, meaning people with lisps get paired, as do two sickly people, and so on.
Farrell’s character has a limp, though as he discovers other women he could match with, he tries to suit them more; for example smashing his own nose because one of the women has constant issues with nosebleeds.
To explain all the weird goings on at the hotel Farrell finds himself in would be to spoil the movie, as the essence of the movie is getting lost in the depths of absurdity. If you missed it the first time, consider going back for it.
