Superhero films are gradually becoming more self-aware of classic tropes, and the Deadpool series has shown and popularised the potential of a tongue-in-cheek approach to superhero storytelling. This meta approach to storytelling can be used in a more reflective, but equally entertaining manner.

Enter Superman: Secret Identity, a 2004 story by Kurt Busiek that chronicles the life of a young man named Clark Kent who lives in a world where DC superheroes merely exist in comics and other media.

Following years of teasing due to his name, he suddenly discovers that he has powers similar to that of his namesake and chooses to use them to protect lives, but in a covert manner.

The story is very low-key compared to other Superman tales, and is light on action and more otherworldly elements that define the Man of Steel's adventures.

However, it makes up for this with its clever writing, creative visuals and more thoughtful characterisation of the hero as he tries to live a normal life while still using his amazing gifts for good.
