10 Great Yuppie Horror Movies

9. Malice

Michael J Fox Bright Lights Big City
Columbia Pictures

Roger Ebert pointed out that Malice is a film that, somehow, makes a subplot about a serial killer seem incidental. And it largely succeeds in doing so thanks to Aaron Sorkin's terrific script.

It may be wacky, but Bill Pullman, a local professor, and wife Nicole Kidman manage to pull it out of dreck and into a thoroughly fun con movie. The couple is desperate for a child, having settled in a new rustic home. However, after Kidman suffers a miscairrage - possibly due to the ego of surgeon Alec Baldwin - they take matters to court.

Things only complicate from there, with double-crosses and enough bait-and-switches than a fish could try to swallow, but the commitment of the cast, the script and the sheer fun of uncovering the mystery makes it worthwhile. Without spoiling too much, it's safe to say that all Kidman desires is the perfect yuppie life - so it would seem. Instead, it deconstructs the perfect family bit by bit.
