10 Greatest Apocalypse Movies Of All Time
8. The World's End
Hey, just because the world's coming to an end doesn't mean we have to be all stoic and depressing about it. Have some humor about doomsday, won't you?
The World's End essentially did for alien invasion movies what Zombieland did for brain-eating apocalypses, and somehow did it even better and without the assistance of Bill Murray. Yeah...let that sink in.
Unfortunately, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's third major collaboration doesn't get as much love as it deserves, possibly because it had the misfortune of hitting theaters the same year as another apocalyptic parody, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen's This Is The End. Surface level comparisons aside, though, The World's End is a much more detailed exploration of the genre.
It's not quite as adorably reverent as Shaun Of The Dead or as frenetic as Hot Fuzz, but The World's End elevates itself to become more than just a comedic homage. The movie is equal parts silly and sad, presenting the reunion of five childhood friends - who attempt an epic pub crawl for reasons that become profoundly tragic later on - much as it would happen in real life: with stupid inside jokes, obnoxious stories, and sobering revelations.
But also, there's aliens.
