10 Greatest Apocalypse Movies Of All Time
9. A Boy And His Dog
Based on the works of Harlan Ellison, this post-apocalyptic look at 2024 is more than a little odd on the surface. First of all, it stars beloved television icon and linen suit enthusiast Don Johnson as the titular boy. Johnson also shares his screen time with a telepathic dog who helps Johnson sniff out women to have sex with, because apparently that's the most pressing matter in the fallout of a nuclear war.
To simply call A Boy and His Dog "weird" or "offbeat" is like calling Jeffrey Dahmer "a foodie." No, this is a gleefully insane little movie, brimming with a caustic sense of irony and a whole lotta anti-government derision.
In parts, it's also sweet: the relationship between boy and dog isn't exactly Timmy and Lassie, but it certainly has its more tender moments. Think of it more like a live-action Stewie and Brian Griffin, but with fewer gay panic jokes.
The movie goes with a subterranean post-apocalypse, where civilization has recreated a bizarro suburban hellscape underground, complete with mass impotence.
The third act might be a little disappointing for some, but if you're really engrossed in these bizarre misadventures, it shouldn't come as much of a shock.
