10 Greatest British Themed Romance Films

8. One Day (2011)

Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by David Nicholls, 'One Day' tells the story of twenty years in the life of Dexter (Jim Strugess) and Emma (Anne Hathaway), following them each year on St. Swithin's Day (July 15th), the day they met. They become friends after almost becoming romantically involved on the last day of university and try to keep in touch with each other while Dexter travels the world and Emma writes and performs unsuccessful plays. There are many attempts from both sides to begin an intimate relationship, but life seems to get in the way and they can never seem to find the right time to get together, with the differences in their class and life choices affecting their feelings for each other. Directed by Lone Scherfig whose directing credits include An Education, the film has a very English feel about it and although Hathaway's Yorkshire accent is patchy at times, she still shines as plain girl Emma. A gorgeous British love story.
