5. Franz Sanchez

The only Bond villain brutal enough to boost his movie up to the dreaded 15 rating, Franz Sanchez is especially intimidating because of how his relatively understated portrayal clashes with the calculating sadism of his actions. The drug-lord behind a corruption-riddled Banana Republic, his savage attack on long-time Bond-ally Felix Leiter and his new bride provide Daltons brooding Bond with a truly exquisite motive for revenge, and makes their final confrontation brutally satisfying. This is without even mentioning the infamous scene with the vacuum chamber Though Licence To Kill underwhelmed at the box office, there were worse ways for Bond to see out the 1980s than in an unrestrained grudge-match with a truly despicable foe.
