2. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Dr Gonzo Benicio Del Toro
Universal Pictures

This is another film which bombed at the box office during initial release, but due to DVD re-releases, has become one of the iconic cult classics.

Journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) has been sent to Las Vegas to cover the Mint 400 motorcycle race, bringing Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) along with him. After scaring a young hitchhiker (Toby McGuire) with their psychedelic drug use, they race to beat the young man to the capital before he can alert the police to their activities. Tripping on acid, the film includes a Barbra Streisand obsessed Lucy (Christina Ricci) and attempt to buy an orangutang

Depp's performance is outstanding and the visuals alone of this film are enough to hypnotise. With some heavy back end metaphors, which are easy to miss - like the American Dream being represented as a junkyard of wrecked cars - it deserves a lot more credit than it is usually given.

Best Moment

Raoul arrives at the hotel, tripping on acid. In his altered state of mind, he beginning to believe that the floor has come alive in the hotel lobby and is slowly creeping up the wall. The receptionist also morphs into a barracuda, whom he shrinks away from in fear. The scene is enough to give you an idea of what acid can be like - in a hilarious manner - without having to actually go though the ordeal.
