3. David Cronenberg

Its took a very long time for David Cronenberg to get recognition, and is still barely acknowledged by the mainstream. He earned his stripes making low-budget horror movies in the 70s that were mainly ignored, before finally breaking through with the excellent Scanners, otherwise known as The One Where The Head Explodes. You know a Cronenberg film when you see one, theyre distinctly audacious as he furrows deep in the human mind, in ways that at first baffle you, with his visually churning metaphors. Some of his films can be very inaccessible with high-minded ideas and his shocking way of exploring them. The Fly is a metaphor for the AIDS epidemic of the 80s, Crash is a hauntingly cold film and a near perfect one at that and A History of Violence takes a primal look at the nature and instinct of violence in very Cronenberg fashion. In his sixties, hes still at the cutting edge of cinema, ever evolving, but still with his raw, distinct and thoughtful style. One of cinemas smartest, but still underrated auteurs. Top 5 Films:
