1. Green Goblin
Judging from the No Way Home trailer alone, it was impossible not to assume that Otto Octavius would be the primary antagonist throughout Peter Parker’s dabble with the multiverse. Had that been the case, he most certainly would have made this list. However, as Ock ultimately fought on Parker’s side, it was Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn that both ran and stole the show.
19 years ago, Osborn was an incredibly intimidating, evil and downright creepy villain, and has been lauded as one of the greatest comic book movie villains ever since. Upon his return to the big screen in 2021, he dialled all of the above to at least 11 or 12.
He was unmatched in his threat to Peter Parker, he physically dominated him, and he killed Aunt May with that heartless sneer painted across his face. He even had the gall to laugh about it later, placing the guilt and blame directly at Spidey’s door.
As the Green Goblin, Willem Dafoe was spine chilling and deliciously evil, and as the helpless Norman Osborn, he was sympathetic and almost endearing. This performance, both sides of it, had everything fans could have dreamed of, and was more than worth the wait.
